CULTURE: TOP 8 CLASSIC BLACK FILMS!

Hey my people! Today marks 15 years that one of my favorite movies, Paid In Full dropped for the world to see. I wanted to give love to the Black films that make the culture proud. Mostly these come from the 90's when it was a major time for Black film. These top 8 films are my bias picks (it was the hardest thing I have done in awhile) and I added a few honorable mentions.

1. LOVE & BASKETBALL:

Released in 2000 and everybody in the grand momma wanted their life to be like this movie (ok, maybe it was just me). Rotten tomato gave it an 82% and BET still showing reruns along with shaft (rolls eyes) point is, this is better be in your movie case for the next generation.

2. THE WOOD:

"Is you cuz or blood?" This movie was love! Released in 1999. It's films like this that make you proud of your teenage craziness. Watching their story and them growing up are friend goals indeed!

3. FRIDAY:

Probably thee funniest movie of our time. Released in 1995 this had everyone laughing, a cross over film and one that makes Black folks proud indeed!

4. PAID IN FULL:

Released in 2002, and rotten tomato gave this epic film a 52%! We know the truth! If you have not seen this film I am personally hurt! I want to say this is for anyone who ever knew hustle. This film has many levels when it comes to the streets, ghetto, the drug game (it's based on a true story) and love.

5. BELLY:

This one came out in 1998. Do you remember the energy of 1998! EPIC! The message in this film is deep. Hype Williams and the imagery is a ghetto classic a lot of people forget about. Nas ole smell good looking self, and DMX in his rough neck prime holds nothing back in this film. Going through the headache of a drug Lord who wants to get out the game. Heartfelt, moving, and real! This film was rated a 13% on rotten tomato! Get out of here! "I don't like that, Imma have to drop a time on them Ni*&$"

6. COMING TO AMERICA:

This film is 29 years old! Okay, if you never seen this I understand why you have not, but for the people, and the respect of Eddie Murphy comic genus self you gotta get on board! For those of you who can sing the songs, quote every word, soul glow, and you know what's up about Sexual Chocolate pull up to McDowell's!

7. LOVE JONES:

Need I say anything about Darius Lovehall and Nina Mosely? The romance, the poetry, the real life emotional battle Nina and Darius go through to find love is mesmerizing. There aren't too many films that touch on Black love outside of rage and drama (that's us too so let's be clear!) This film feels good. It is about friends, family, and realness! It was released in 1997.

8. HARLEM NIGHTS:

"You shot my Pinky toe!"HAHAHAHAH! This is real OG's at its finest and you need this kind of love in your life. It was released in 1989, so if your mom and folks excluded this from they movie library you might be behind. This is about two Black club owners who are pulling in more money then their non-Black competition and it gets heated. You step into the life of some top Club owners and what they have to do to survive.

Honorable mentions:

Boyz in the hood, Waiting to exhale, Low down dirty shame, Crooklyn, School Daze, Malcom X, What's love got to do with it, Five Heartbeats, Above the Rim, Juice, He Got Game, She's Gotta Have It, and Best Man.

Alright, y'all can cuss, scream, laugh, smile, and roll your eyes in the comments. What's your favorite Black film?
